Every year, at the beginning of July, thousands of amateur radio operators from around the world take part in one of the most recognizable amateur radio events in North America β the 13 Colonies Special Event. Organized continuously since 2008, the event commemorates the thirteen colonies that formed the foundation of the United States of America.
The event takes place annually from July 1 through July 7, coinciding with the celebration of American Independence Day. Special event stations representing each of the original colonies appear on the amateur radio bands, operating under callsigns K2A through K2M. Each callsign is assigned to a specific state that was part of the original thirteen colonies.
Participants aim to make contact with as many colonial stations as possible. The highest achievement is earning a βClean Sweep,β which requires completing contacts with all thirteen colonies. In addition, several bonus stations are active during the event: WM3PEN in Philadelphia, associated with William Penn and the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence; GB13COL in Great Britain; and TM13COL in France.
The presence of stations from England and France serves as a reminder of the historical connections these nations had to the period surrounding the American War of Independence.
The event was conceived by amateur radio operator Ken Villone, KU2US, who in 2008 decided to create a one-day activity inspired by the ARRL Sweepstakes contest. The project proved to be a tremendous success and quickly evolved into one of the most recognized special events in amateur radio.
According to the organizers, the first edition generated approximately 12,000 contacts. Interest grew rapidly in subsequent years, reaching nearly 300,000 QSOs annually. Participants include operators from around the world, attracting both experienced amateur radio enthusiasts and newcomers just beginning their journey in the hobby.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the event is its commemorative certificates and unique QSL cards. Each colony has its own card design, and participants may apply for awards recognizing their achievements. Interestingly, shortwave listeners (SWLs) may also participate and receive certificates after documenting their receptions of the event stations.
Many amateur radio operators describe the 13 Colonies Special Event as one of the friendliest radio activities of the year. Because the event lasts an entire week, there is none of the pressure typically associated with contests. Operators have time to collect colonies at their own pace, experiment with different bands and modes, and learn about the history surrounding the founding of the United States. The amateur radio community regularly regards the event as an excellent opportunity to gain experience and earn a first special-event award.
This year's edition will run from July 1, 2026, at 13:00 UTC through July 8, 2026, at 04:00 UTC. Stations K2AβK2M and the bonus stations will once again be active on the bands, giving amateur radio operators worldwide the opportunity to participate in one of the most recognized special events in amateur radio.
